How LegitimateLand Works

From drawing your parcel to resolving disputes — here is the complete process for documenting and protecting your land claim.

01

Create Your Account

Sign up with your email address. Your personal information is kept private and never shown on public claim records.

02

Draw Your Parcel

Use the interactive map to draw the boundaries of your land. Choose between Mapbox satellite imagery or OpenStreetMap. You can also input GPS coordinates directly.

  • Draw polygon boundaries on the map
  • Automatic area calculation in square meters
  • Choose your boundary source: GPS, satellite, hand-drawn
  • Set confidence level for boundary accuracy
03

Select Your Claim Type

Choose the type of claim that best describes your relationship to the land. Available types depend on the country configuration.

  • Ownership — freehold or statutory title
  • Customary — traditional/community-based rights
  • Occupancy — long-term occupation without formal title
  • Lease — formal or informal lease agreements
  • Communal — community or group-based ownership
  • Inheritance — land passed down through succession
04

Upload Evidence

Strengthen your claim by uploading supporting documents. Evidence types include photos, legal documents, receipts, survey maps, and more.

  • Supported formats: images, PDFs, video
  • Each file is hashed for integrity verification
  • Set access levels: public, claim parties only, or private
  • Secure storage via Uploadcare
05

Gather Attestations

Invite community members — neighbors, elders, local leaders — to verify your claim by providing attestation statements.

  • Attestors specify their relationship to the claimant
  • Provide written statements about the land
  • Attestors can confirm or revoke their attestation
  • Multiple attestations strengthen community confidence
06

Submit & Publish

Review and submit your claim. It becomes publicly visible (excluding your personal details) so the community can see and verify the record.

07

Overlap Detection

If your parcel overlaps with an existing claim, both parties are notified. The platform calculates the exact overlap percentage and area.

08

Dispute Resolution

Overlapping claims enter a structured dispute resolution pathway that varies by country — from community mediation to formal arbitration.

  • Both parties can submit additional evidence
  • Structured event timeline tracks all actions
  • Country-specific resolution steps (e.g., Abunzi in Rwanda)
  • Resolution summary is documented on the platform
